Stan’s Notes: A fast-growing ornamental tree also known as Wild Plum. Shade intolerant, preferring open sunny sites. Flowers are large and attractive. Resulting plums are highly prized by wildlife and people. Plums make good jellies and jams; can be eaten fresh. Very similar to Canada Plum (pg. 91), but differentiated from it by the lack of two small red glands on its leafstalks (petioles). Twigs often smell of bitter almond when crushed. The large sharp thorns (see inset) are actually modified branches. In pioneer times, its thorns were used for mending clothes and other tasks.
